
Remedies - Sore Throat
Some eat to live, others live to eat. Throughout life, different circumstances will affect our ability to eat well. Eating a variety of food is essential in life. In other words, we need to eat to live. Eating food with a wide range of nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats provide our bodies with the materials needed to keep our systems functioning well. One must consult a doctor if not well and eating nutritious healthy food is the least we can do in the journey of healing.
This week our theme is on remedy for sore throat or cough. Most of the ingredients in this week’s recipes are good for our throat and lungs. Some are with high anti-inflammatory and soothing effects on our throat and lungs. The recipes are good for us who are healthy too because prevention is better than cure.

HONEY KABU (TOKYO TURNIPS) SIMPLE SORE THROAT/COUGH REMEDY
INGREDIENTS:
1 medium size (200gm) Kabu
3 Tbsp Absolute Organic Manuka Honey (Good quality)
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Clean, peel and slice the turnip into thin slices. One can dice it too if you prefer it that way.
2. Put it in a glass jar, cover evenly with Absolute Organic Manuka Honey. Cover with a lid and leave it in room temperature for at least 4 hours.
3. When it’s ready, serving options are flexible. One can just munch on the turnip as snack or serve it with salad or as an appetizer.
4. Another way, make a cup of drink simply by mixing 2-3 Tbsp of the mixture with warm/cool water.
Note: After 4 hours the moisture from the turnip will have seeped out and merged with the honey creating a super syrupy elixir of efficacy. Turnip and honey have expectorant, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. Studies have suggested that honey is effective at soothing throat inflammation and cough suppressant, while turnip is also said to have antibacterial properties. This remedy recipe is at least going to give your body plenty of nutrients and soothe your throat. Just remember leftover must be refrigerated and only up to 3 days.
ALMOND MINTY AVOCADO SMOOTHIES
INGREDIENTS:
1 Avocado (peeled and halved)
1 Cup Plenish milk almond
10 leaves of fresh mint
1 Tbsp Absolute Organic Manuka Honey
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Use frozen/cool avocado and super cool Plenish milk almond. Blend avocado, almond milk, fresh mint and Absolute Organic Manuka Honey together with any type of blender for 1 minute.
2. Serve with few mint leaves.
Note: People with sore throat or cough should avoid dairy products and banana. Avocado is a much better choice than banana for smoothies which gives the creamy texture and also much higher Potassium. High sugar level in banana can cause phlegm. Almond milk is tasty and very good remedy for cough. Mint has soothing effect on our throat and relieves cough. Honey is a good cough suppressant.
UNDER WEATHER VEGETABLES PASTA SOUP
INGREDIENTS:
1 Tbsp Olive oil
1 Medium Onion (diced)
3 cloves garlic (chopped)
2 medium carrots (chopped)
1 medium parsnip (chopped)
1 turnip (chopped)
1 head broccoli (chopped)
2 cubes Marigold Organic Swiss Vegetable Bouillon Cubes
1 liter water
1 Can Biona Organic Lentils Green (rinsed and drained)
1 cup dried Biona White Spelt Fusilli
1/4 Tsp Simply Organic Ginger
2 Tsp Simply Organic Oregano
2 Tbsp Absolute Organic Balsamic Vinegar (Optional to those who like sourish soup)
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Cook the Biona White Spelt Fusilli by following the instructions in the packaging. Drained and set aside.
2. Add the olive oil to a stock pot and heat over medium heat, then add the onion and garlic - cook until they become translucent.
3. Add the carrots, turnips and parsnips – cook until they become crisp tender.
4. Add 1 liter of water together with the can of Biona Organic Lentils Green and Marigold Organic Swiss Vegetable Bouillon Cubes with the Simply Organic Ginger powder. Let it simmer with a lid covered for 15 minutes.
5. Turn the fire to high, add the chopped broccoli with the Simply Organic Oregano and cover with lid. Cook for 2 minutes. This way, the broccoli will cook fast without turning yellow.
6. Mix the fusilli in the soup before turning off the fire. Optional - stir in 1 Tbsp of Absolute Organic Balsamic Vinegar just before serving. Served up to 4 servings.
Note: Even if you’re not vegan, it’s good to have vegan food if you’re down with sore throat. A simple hot bowl of versatile soup is nutritious and heartwarming. Lentil is a good source of protein. Ginger powder and oregano in this soup recipe are excellent remedies for a sore throat.
